Scarecrow Scarecrow, born Jonathan Crane, was a brilliant psychologist who specialized in fear and phobias. He worked at Arkham Asylum, where he conducted experiments on the inmates to understand the human psyche and how fear could be used as a weapon. One day, while conducting an experiment, he was exposed to a toxic gas that caused him to have a psychotic break. He became obsessed with the concept of fear and began using it to control others. He created a mask with a scarecrow's head and began using a variety of fear-inducing toxins to terrorize Gotham City. Batman, who had been tracking Scarecrow's activities, eventually caught up to him and put an end to his reign of terror. However, Scarecrow was too dangerous to be kept in prison, so he was sent to Arkham Asylum, where he continued to experiment on the inmates and hone his skills in the art of fear.
