Jacques NECKER Jacques Necker was a Swiss banker who served as the Minister of Finance of France from 1776 to 1781. He was a key figure in the French Revolution, and his policies helped to bring about the downfall of the monarchy. Necker was born in Geneva in 1732. He studied law and economics, and eventually became a successful banker. In 1776, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance by King Louis XVI. Necker was a strong believer in free trade and economic liberalism, and he implemented a number of reforms that helped to improve the French economy. However, Necker's reforms were unpopular with the aristocracy, who saw them as a threat to their power. In 1781, Necker was dismissed from office by the king. Necker's dismissal sparked a wave of protests in Paris, and it helped to set the stage for the French Revolution. In 1789, the revolutionaries stormed the Bastille, and the monarchy was overthrown. Necker returned to France after the Revolution, and he served as a member of the National Assembly. He died in 1804. Necker was a complex and controversial
