Esau Esau was a man of the field, a hunter who was rough and hairy. His younger twin brother, Jacob, was a plain or simple man. Esau was the firstborn, but Jacob was the favorite of their mother, Rebecca. When Esau was hungry one day, he sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Later, when Isaac was old and blind, he gave his blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. Esau was angry and vowed to kill Jacob. But Jacob fled to his uncle Laban, where he worked for many years to earn the hand of Laban's daughter, Rachel. After a long and difficult journey, Jacob finally returned home to Canaan and reunited with his family.
