Cleveland Cleveland is a heavy cruiser in the United States Navy. She was the lead ship of her class of cruisers, and was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named after the city of Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland was laid down on 25 April 1920 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on 28 November 1921, and commissioned on 22 May 1923. Cleveland served in the Atlantic Ocean during the interwar period. She participated in the Neutrality Patrol during World War II, and saw action in the Battle of the Atlantic. After the war, Cleveland was decommissioned and placed in reserve. She was struck from the Navy List on 15 January 1951, and sold for scrap on 14 July 1959. Cleveland was a popular ship with her crew, and was known for her excellent seakeeping qualities. She was also known for her nickname, "The Fighting Cleveland".
