He's been taken in by a "friend" of his, Mr. Compeyson, to try and snake the family's brewery out from under his half-sister Amelia, though he's easily manipulated and cannot now get out of the scheme even though he wants to. He is also afraid of being found out to be gay, as this would easily get him arrested.
