PS Weeroona
The paddle steamer PS Weeroona was a sight to behold. Built in 1910 by A. & J. Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, Scotland, she was an impressive vessel with her two tall smokestacks and four massive paddle wheels. She was initially owned by Huddart Parker Ltd, Melbourne, and used to transport passengers and cargo between Melbourne and Sydney.
In 1914, PS Weeroona was requisitioned for wartime service and used by the United States Army as a barracks and quarters ship. She served in this capacity throughout the war, transporting troops and supplies to and from the front lines.
After the war, PS Weeroona returned to her original role of transporting passengers and cargo. She continued to serve in this capacity until 1935, when she was retired and scrapped.
Although PS Weeroona's career was relatively short, she made a significant contribution to the war effort. She transported thousands of troops and supplies to the front lines, helping to ensure the Allied victory. She is a reminder of the sacrifices that were made during the war, and of the importance of maritime transportation.
