Tatekawa was born in 1874 in Yamagata Prefecture. He graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1896 and served in the Japanese military for over 30 years. He held a number of important military positions, including Chief of the General Staff and Minister of War. As Minister of War, Tatekawa was a strong advocate for Japanese expansionism. He believed that Japan needed to expand its territory in order to secure its national security.
