Calafia Calafia, or Califia, was a fierce warrior queen who ruled over a kingdom of black women on the island of California. She was eventually defeated by the Christian knight Esplandián, but she converted to Christianity and married his cousin. Calafia has been depicted as the Spirit of California, and she often figures in the myth of California's origin, symbolizing an untamed and bountiful land prior to European settlement.
