Jean VALJEAN
Jean Valjean was a French peasant who was imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister and her children. After his release, he assumed the name of Monsieur Madeleine and became a successful businessman. He was eventually elected mayor of the town of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
One day, Valjean encountered a young woman named Fantine who was being forced into prostitution by her employer. Valjean helped Fantine and her daughter Cosette, and eventually took them in as his own.
Fantine died shortly thereafter, and Valjean was forced to go on the run when he was accused of stealing a silver candlestick from a church. He was eventually captured and sentenced to death, but was saved by the intervention of Bishop Myriel.
Valjean then devoted his life to helping others, and became a symbol of hope and redemption. He died at the age of 80, surrounded by his loved ones.
