Saruman Saruman, also known as Saruman the White, is a powerful wizard in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. He was sent to Middle-earth by the Valar, a group of godlike beings, to challenge Sauron, the main antagonist of the story. However, Saruman eventually fell to the temptation of power and tried to take over Middle-earth for himself. He was defeated by the forces of good and his power was broken.

Sauron The Dark Lord Sauron, the story's primary antagonist, was the chief lieutenant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth. He rules the land of Mordor and has the ambition of ruling the whole of Middle-earth. He appears most often as "the Eye", as if disembodied.

Legolas is a close friend of the Dwarf Gimli, and the two of them often have humorous interactions.

Gandalf Gandalf is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Fellowship of the Ring. He is a powerful being, but works mostly by encouraging and persuading. He is focused on the mission to counter the Dark Lord Sauron by destroying the One Ring. He is associated with fire, and his ring of power is Narya, the Ring of Fire. He delights in fireworks to entertain the hobbits of the Shire, while in great need he uses fire as a weapon. Gandalf is an immortal spirit from Valinor, but his physical body can be killed. In The Hobbit, he assists the 13 dwarves and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins with their quest to retake the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. In The Lord of the Rings, he reveals that Sauron's retreat was only a feint, and that Bilbo's ring is the One Ring that Sauron needs to dominate the whole of Middle-earth. He leads the Fellowship of the Ring to defeat Sauron by destroying the Ring. After he dies fighting a Balrog, Gandalf is sent back from Valinor to Middle-earth to complete his mission as Gandalf the White. He helps to counter the enemy in Rohan, Gondor, and finally at the Black Gate

Morgoth was a powerful and evil being, and he had been defeated by no one before. Fingolfin challenged Morgoth to single combat and he fought bravely. He wounded Morgoth many times, but in the end he was killed by the Dark Lord.

Aragorn Aragorn is a Ranger of the North, first introduced with the name Strider. He is the heir of Isildur, an ancient King of Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn fell in love with the immortal elf Arwen, but her father forbade them to marry unless Aragorn became King of both Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn led the Fellowship of the Ring following the loss of Gandalf in the Mines of Moria. When the Fellowship was broken, he tracked the hobbits Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took with the help of Legolas the elf and Gimli the dwarf to Fangorn Forest. He then fought in the battle at Helm's Deep and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. After defeating Sauron's forces in Gondor, he led an army of Gondor and Rohan against the Black Gate of Mordor, distracting Sauron's attention and enabling Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn was acclaimed as King by the people of Gondor, and crowned King of both Gondor and Arnor. He then married Arwen and ruled for 122 years.

Glorfindel Glorfindel is a powerful Elf-lord who could withstand the Nazgûl, wraith-like servants of Sauron. He holds his own against some of them single-handedly. He is also a skilled horseman, and in Peter Jackson's live-action The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Glorfindel's role of rescuing Frodo from the pursuing Nazgûl by lending his horse is given to the elf-woman Arwen.

Gollum Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk who lived near the Gladden Fields. He was originally known as Sméagol, but after murdering his relative Déagol for the One Ring, he became Gollum.
