He is typically depicted as a black Moor from Spain, and those portraying the traditional version of the character usually put on blackface and colourful Renaissance attire in addition to curly wigs and bright red lipstick. However, the character has become increasingly controversial in recent years, and a revised version, dubbed Sooty Piet, has become more common at public events. Sooty Piet features the natural skin tone of the actors playing the character with soot marks created by streaks of dark makeup on their faces.

He is celebrated in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, western Germany, northern France, and Hungary on his feast day, December 6th.
