One day, he is walking in the forest when he comes across a group of dogs who are being attacked by a group of men. Daihachi bravely fights off the men and saves the dogs. The dogs are grateful to Daihachi, and they decide to follow him home. Daihachi names the dogs Riki, Gonta, Shiro, and Hachi.
