Atem was a master of the Millennium Item, the Millennium Puzzle, which granted him incredible power and allowed him to cheat death. After centuries of ruling his kingdom, Atem was entombed and sealed away, only to be awakened in the modern era by a young duelist named Yugi Mutou. Atem was impressed by Yugi's skills and spirit, and decided to stay in the present to learn more about the world and the game of Duel Monsters. Atem took on the alias of Pharaoh and began to travel the world, challenging duelists to test their skills and seeking to understand the true meaning of life and death. Along the way, he formed strong bonds with his friends and allies, and continued to hone his abilities as a duelist.
